about

Against Sleep and Nightmare was named after a Situationist International inspired left-commie newsprint publication that was circulating in Portland around the time we were doing our thing. The music isn't a homage to it by any stretch, but the title was wonderfully Surreal (Chicago, not Paris), and it was a totally useless test of who in our small audience mixed their noise with their Guy Debord. I certainly did. "Lipstick Traces" was my first real encounter with anarchism outside of the punk D.I.Y. praxis. While the theory it referenced was obtuse (maybe unreadable in translation), the ideas about spectacle and the politics of everyday life, the invitation to détourne and dérive, all of that just made sense, like something I already knew but didn't realize there was language for. I'm not sure about the S.I. and the origins of punk, but by the nineties I had Nation of Ulysses and that was enough for me.

As the name was meant to imply, this was our first committed foray into "ambient" music. I have no idea what Pete thought he was doing, but I was just trying not to overplay, which was very hard for me. The music is a low hum of static, pulse minor throbs, scratches and cool accidents. Listening back I can hear the industrial hiss of a low-run Wolf Eyes cassette on American Tapes, but also the third ear space-out of Super Unity Group and the Rasbliutto label. We were maximalists at heart, but whenever we committed to our particular brand of restraint it created something interesting.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
