about

Gabe:
It’s been both painful and moving to initiate this archival project at the same time as Portland has become a literal ground zero of anti-police and anti-fascist conflict. For folks who aren’t from Portland it must seem strange, but having lived there through most of the Bush years I can say that nothing about this is surprising. When I arrived in 2001 tensions were high: there was still an ongoing fall-out from the 1999 WTO which Police blamed on “Eugene Anarchists”, and the Earth Liberation Front had been named the “top domestic terror threat” by the FBI. It was common to be at a house show and have police surveilling everyone coming and going.

When you read about the PPB today you might hear names that reverberate from back in our day: Kendra James, James Jahar Perez, James Chasse, Vernon Allen…(r.i.p.) The cops in Portland sheltered fascists (like Mark Kruger, a police captain who built a shrine to Nazi soldiers in a Portland park) and used brutal force to attack protestors, union folks and the anarchic weirdos who showed up for May Day each year. What you see in the news today is decades of frustration and disappointment in the total lack of accountability that has perpetuated police terror, and the coddling of Neo-nazi and far right gangs out in the suburbs.

When George W. Bush came to Portland in 2001 there was a lot of talk about how his dad had called Portland “Little Beiruit” (because of how belligerent protestors were). I got my first whiff of tear gas when a couple thousand people surrounded the hotel that baby Bush was staying at during his visit. Today, while watching PPB and the feds unleash whole storm clouds of teargas on folks, watching the strange mix of humor and militancy from the crowds in the street, it would almost feel nostalgic if the stakes weren’t so high and if lives weren’t on the line.

Anyways, that’s basically what this EP was "about" for me in 2002. It was also our first attempt at recording multi-tracked and collaborating with an engineer/producer - a local punk who set us up in his practice space for a day. Coincidentally or not, a bass player and drummer in the room next door played “the Imperial March” for about two hours straight during our recording session. I’m assuming it’s on there somewhere.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
