about

Ok, so this is another Yellow Swans BASEMENT TAPE sort of thing, along the lines of Drowner. We had a practice space below the Rotture club in Portland, we'd practice a few days a week when we weren't touring or working on an album. This was all recorded after At All Ends and before Going Places/Being There/Drowner.

We were gearing up to go on a trip to do the Free Noise tour in the UK and a few other, normal duo gigs around the EU, we wanted to do something for the trip that was like NEW STUFF and ONLY FOR THE TOUR. so we cobbled this together, which was basically just like.. a best of recent jams and filled out with some detritus. I'd do things like transfer my reel to reel tapes after a sesh and we'd jam over it a bit and some of that is on here, like it is on Drowner. just messy studio noodling that was worthwhile. We had like 50 blank c60s, asked Shawn Reed to do a quick cover and bam there it is.

The thing is with this thing is that it captured a great moment for us, where we were stretching our sounds and improvisations towards something new and ended up producing a record that's maybe us at our most krautrock sounding, but also just beyond blasted. the tape is in the red saturated and you can hear the sweat in the room. This one feels HOT. Gabe and I both love this one, and so did our pal Tom Loftus, who wanted to put out the tape on a CD. EASY. Reedie colored the sketch in, copies were manufactured and the band imploded shortly thereafter. As it should be.

Anyway. I can't help but think about the Free Noise tour with this one. What a fun and funny time where someone thought it was a good idea to get a whole bunch of us in TWO vans to tour around the UK and play jazz clubs with a gang of freaks on the stage all at once. SUCH good times hanging out with Spencer Yeh and Jenny and Carbon from Metalux. Wiese, our eternal tour companion.. and then Lee who played in Skullflower for a bit, Evan Parker, who told me I was a "two pie guy" after eating multiple pies at Pie Minister in Bristol.. John Edwards, Paul Hession.. Man.. what a freak mob. I hope those recordings can be released at some point. we played a ton of sets and recorded them all multi-track and I've never heard em. But I've got good memories from that trip. I got schooled on scotch and marveled at Carbon dropping her mic into EP's sax and spooling that through her reel to reel. It was messy messy messy. As it should be. I think we sold all of our copies of this tape on day one. Didn't make it far outta Glasgow at least. Oh well. that's what the CD was for.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
