about

I'm sure Pete doesn't agree, but I always thought of this as our first album proper. The reissue disk pulls from two separate sources, one of which was in a limited edition of 30 (if that), and the other of which never actually saw the light of day, and of course this was released a year after our Narnack album, so it doesn't present a very convincing case. Still, the laethe cut FELT like an album, it felt qualitatively different than any thing we'd done before. It felt big, expansive, confident and for a band still figuring our shit out it felt the closest we'd come to having an actual sound that was ours. Listening to it now i feel like it predicts some of the things we would end up doing later... shoegaze guitars and slipping tape and washed out expressionist electronics... In Drowning in Paradise alone I can hear bits of Psychic, At All Ends and Going Places already being worked out.

"Garrison" and "Drowning in Paradise" were cut to gorgeous transparent discs by the New Zealand legend Peter King. I found 14"x16" chunks of carpet onto which we bolted hand folded black paper sleeves covered in white rub-out letters (kind of attempting a concrete poetry vibe), plus a black and white photocopy collage insert. It was janky and crappy but aspired to a Fluxus meets Crass heft. I have no idea who we gave these to, or who has these now, though I remember more than one person sharing at the time that they had made love to the record.

The insert included my swan-head collage/drawing that originally appeared on Ded Yellow Swans and was meant to be a weird cyberpunk meets black metal corpsepaint aesthetic but regularly got compared to I.C.P. much to my chagrin. All the same, it's still my favorite graphic representation of the group, and the cover of the PACrec disc is one of my favorites (and one of the only Yellow Swans album covers that isn't a non-representative abstraction, breaking what was a general rule for the band)

The first and third tracks should have been a very good side to a very good split record with Nice Nice. I still have no idea why that album didn't come out. In any event, it situates us in the wake of our first West Coast tour. Touring with a band you love really matters when you have to hear them every night and touring with Nice Nice was like hearing 10 new bands every night. The dudes were actually nice too. I still have very fond memories of driving through a particular stretch of the 5 in southern Oregon, mountains in the distance, sun setting, and Laughing Stock playing on the car stereo while all of us sat quiet taking it all in.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
