about

Oh boy, as an echo of Drowner, we've got Drowning here which brings back great memories of meeting Jem and the wild scene in portland at the time. Jem had wandered into town and connected with the Super Unity/GOD world of improvisers, but Jem was coming from a more compositional/conceptual frame. I remember Jem turning me on to Michel Chion and wowing everyone with a performance of resonating objects in the oddball warehouse for these sorts of things. Jem also had assembled some "audio drugs" which were perception altering sound pieces. You'd listen to a piece for an hour or two and when you removed the headphones, you'd hear things differently. BRILLIANT. We were all obsessed with Matrix for Rooms already and here we had our own genius in our tiny town tweaking our senses of time and space and perception.

Anyway, we had SEVERAL musical hangs and I can't remember how formal this was. Jem was over a lot, we'd all jam around with our roommate David. Nothing but fond memories of this time despite never having money and occasionally living off toast.

the sounds are a bit more sparse for regular YS fare. a bit AGAINST SLEEP AND NIGHTMARE, but a tad more active than that. Lots of burbling and moving in space. Discrete digital and analog actions. I don't understand any of it, but it's a fun enough listen. maybe a good soundtrack for a sensory deprivation tank. FLOAT ON.

Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
