about

Pete:
By 2003, Gabe and I had figured out that we really couldn’t rely on venues or sound people to make us sound GOOD. It shouldn’t be hard, we were always just like a stereo out from our mixer into the house PA, but we played our cheap gear in a way that struck fear in the hearts of sound people or something stupid, so basically we had to buy our own PA, drag it around the US in our minivan, up and down all the stairs and in and out of all of the houses on all of the tours. Overseas, it was still dicey. To be honest, we never really figured it out until after the band when we discovered that riders were a thing that could be tied to contracts and honored. So when we started leaving the US in 2005 for shows, we faced the same conundrum that we faced as a band in 2001.. How do we sound like we sound? Fortunately in Europe, PAs tend to be a bit more substantial than the tiny vocal PAs that most DIY clubs in the US had.. But then we went to Austrailia…….

Our tour with Gray Daturas was, what we would find out later, a bit unusual for most trips to AUS. Generally people fly in, fly to all their shows, spend maybe a week there and we were there nearly a month and DRIVING. So we played the big cities and that was great.. We also played the small cities.. Equally fun, but way more wonky PAs.. Canberra, Newcastle, Byron Bay, some sketch practice space in Brisbane.. All interspersed with stops on incredible and epic beaches and random drops into highway pie shops that our vegan hosts knew had excellent veg savory pies. Over most of the trip, our PAs were passable, we were able to broadly “do our thing” and play stuff from Psychic for the people. The glaring exception to that was our show at Sydney’s Sound And Fury record store.

The shop, which at the time carried an exceptional selection of CDs and vinyl, had set us up with a pair of those TINY peavy practice amps and a rug to set up on. Gabe and I had a huddle and we basically decided there was NO WAY we could bring our usual pummeling/battering live thing, we definitely could not be loud. So that’s what we did. We recorded it, the store asked to release it, we edited it a tiny bit after listening because we actually thought it was pretty good… Most of our live recordings weren’t really what we wanted to present as releases because they were too rough around the edges, but this one had a VIBE that worked despite the constraints.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
