about

Gabriel:
Titles and artwork always had a lot of work to do: they had to both be open enough and specific enough to matter. With titles we decided early on to just leave it blank or “untitled” if we didn’t have a name for the track. Why force it? I tended towards the melodramatic, while Pete preferred subtle poetics. I could usually persuade Pete to go with a more over-the-top title if it was an interesting enough reference to music or literature. In the case of this record, a reference to the Talking Heads cleared this hurtle, but it also felt like the right title for a “Live” album recorded in the same moment as the revelations around Abu Ghraib, the Haditha massacre, the devastation of Fallujah. How do you make art or perform when this shit is happening? I wanted this record to be remembered as a document of trying to make art about freedom while breaking from the patriotic hegemony and general complacency of that moment.

A lot of people expressed surprise at Devendra’s artwork being on our cover. We’d met Devendra through Jamie Stewart when they did a tour of devastating solo performances. Further connections were made through Andy Cabic of Vetiver, at the time a bass player in Tussle who we toured the west with, and a frequent crossing paths at various nodes. One of my favourite concerts I can remember was on a night off in Denver when we went with Friends Forever to see him play with Joanna Newsome back when those two could still play small all ages warehouse shows. Devendra was ridiculously generous when we asked him to draw the cover - he left a stash of drawings for us before leaving on tour and never asked for anything in return. I did end up returning the favor, sort of, evidence of which can be found on the Incredible String Band inspired Cripple Crow cover. A few years later Xiu Xiu and Devendra did a split 7”, each covering the other’s songs. Devendra recorded a deeply uncomfortable doo-wop version of "Support Our Troops OH!", a blunt anti-war song from Xiu Xiu’s Fabulous Muscles that Pete and I had recorded on. “Did you know you were going to shoot / Off the top of a four year old girl's head / And look across her car-seat down into her skull.” I think people underestimate the aesthetic and political depths that artists connect and create through, the unexpected affinities that make genre and formal style sometimes the least important thing about them.

about

Yellow Swans Portland, Oregon

From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground, at the axis of noise, psychedelia, industrial, drone, and hardcore. Their music is restless, ragged, and forever in flux, untethered and unresolved. ... more
